Louisa May Alcott 1832-188 is best known for her novels Little Women and the sequels Little Men and Jo�s Boys. The daughter of Abigail May Alcott and Amos Louisa was born on November 29th 1832 and grew up in New England, USA. Louisa Alcott had to work to support her family from an early age but began to receive critical success for her writing in the early 1860s sometimes using the pen name of A.M. Barnard.

Louisa Alcott�s most famous novel, Little Women is based in Orchard House, the Alcott family house  in Concord, Massachusetts. The novel is said to be based on some of Louisa�s childhood experiences including those of her three sisters.

Louisa Alcott was outspoken about the slave trade and was a feminist, never marrying.

Louisa died in Boston on March 6 1888.
